Advanx Sculpture by Axolotl Metal

As part of our showcase on public art projects, we are privileged to have worked with renowned Sydney art duo Susan Milne and Greg Stonehouse on a number of projects. Most recently Axolotl again had the opportunity to work with Milne & Stonehouse on a site specific installation commissioned for the new Advanx Apartments in Rushcutters Bay. The site of the development was previously the Advanx tyre factory which provided inspiration for the sculptures. Manufactured in aluminium, the structures which range up to 4 metres in height, are bonded with Axolotl Zinc. The lasercut fragments of tyre treads are paralleled by plant fossil prints which Axolotl have etched onto each of the multi faceted elements. As interpreted by Milne and Stonehouse, the piece explores the layered print of plant life with the imprint of humans.

Axolotl 'Vanguard' Doors

Carved Crack - Copper Smooth w Pearl Patina

Oversize doors are more popular now than ever. Which is unsurprising considering the unique statement they make.

Using conventional substrates for oversize doors, however, can present challenges including weight, workability and warping.

The 'Vanguard' door overcomes these restrictions. 'Vanguard' consists of two layers of a specialised composite laminated to an aluminium frame. The outer skin provides a durable layer with long-term structural stability and excellent chemical and moisture resistant properties. The specialised composite allows the faces to be routered or machined to a pre-determined depth without compromising the integrity of the door.

The door featured has a unique 'cracked' design carved into the face of the door continuing across onto the side panel. The door is bonded with Axolotl Copper Smooth Pearl.

However you can take your creative ideas to the limit as the 'Vanguard' door can be bonded with any Axolotl metal and effect.

The same structural technology is also used for gates and garage doors allowing you to coordinate these elements to make a big design statement.

Axolotl at DesignEX 2010

Axolotl Lucent was shortlisted for Best New Product at DesignEX this year. We of course, are thrilled but not surprised. This unique and innovative product, takes glass to a new level of possibilities. Panels are deep carved to a standard or custom design, and injected with transparent dyes creating a colour feature that can represent understated simplicity or a dramatic kaleidoscope of colour.

Lucent naturally features on our stand, injecting a green hue into the angled glass blades forming one wall of the stand. The facing wall of double lasercut screens in Axolotl Treasury Bronze mirrors the three dimensional design of the Lucent panels.

Our new timber inspired range, Ingrain, forms the wall paneling in Pewter, and in Bronze Florentine for the flooring, demonstrating both its versatility as well as durability. A floating bench, bonded with Axolotl Cayman contrasts beautifully with a splash of lawn.

Illuminated Miro glass laminated panels displaying vibrant images of butterflies line the interior walls and a section of the floor features Axolotl Lunar flooring in Pewter. The entire structure is wrapped in Axolotl Viper in Bronze from our Skin collection.

Special to thanks to our partners: Philip Chia, JSB Lighting, Bang & Olufsen, Sydney Glass, Linea Interiors and De De Ce.

Ingrained in Axolotl

Axolotl Metal continues to deliver the unexpected, with the introduction of its innovative new timber inspired range.

Ingrain fuses the lustre of Axolotl Metal with the natural warmth and beauty of wood to create an unparalleled alternative for flooring and wall panelling.

By bonding the timber with Axolotl Metal fine details of the grain can be read through, creating the appearance of timber cast in solid metal. It delivers a hardwearing surface and is suitable for internal and external applications for commercial and residential projects.

Other possible applications for Ingrain are counters, feature walls, bar fronts, joinery or table tops.

Ingrain flooring doesn't require any onsite finishing and with the patina evolving over time as the metal is polished by passing foot traffic.

The wall panelling pictured here is bonded in pewter, however as with all Axolotl products, Ingrain is available in any Axolotl metal.

Fences by Axolotl Metal

Security and privacy are essential criteria for most commercial and residential projects, but often it’s a challenge to achieve both without compromising the aesthetics or overall design concept. Gates and fences bonded with Axolotl Metal provide a beautifully practical solution to this design dilemma. Axolotl Metal is an ideal material for external screening and security elements due to its durable, weather resistant characteristics and its ability to be bonded to practically any material.

Custom designed lasercut steel, CFC or phenolic resin panels bonded with Axolotl Metal allow maximum control over levels of privacy whilst creating a striking feature. Even more complex forms can be achieved by stacking or layering panels and incorporating different metals, textures and patinas.

Sculpture by the Sea

Award winning sculptor Mark McClelland's latest work 'of memory' will be shown for the first time at this year's Sculpture by the Sea, in Mark's Park, Bondi. Constructed from steel plate and bonded with Axolotl Aluminium, the sculpture is a span structure, cantilevered into space from one fixed point

Mark says the work is based around the ideas of risk and commitment. A significant engineering feat, the work is so finely balanced that it moves in a breeze, yet despite this apparent delicacy, is engineered to function as a seat, and will comfortably support the load of people sitting on it. Under this load 'of memory' will oscillate, delivering a kinetic experience to the viewer/user.

Sculpture by the Sea commences tomorrow and runs until 15th November.

Glass Reflected in Metal

Now it’s easy to creating a cohesive designer look in metal and glass. Almost any motif, photographic reference or illustration can be transferred between the two mediums offering virtually unlimited applications. The work shown here has been produced using Axolotl Rust applied to a lasercut screen door. The same design was sandblasted to a frameless glass door. The end effect creates individual impact, with the sum of the parts even greater through the harmony of the design story.

Both processes are equally able to be utilised on doors, feature walls, counter fronts, garage doors - practically anywhere, inside or out, where you desire to create a unique impact.

When one door shuts...

Axolotl bring you two innovative new ranges, 'Skin' and 'Etch'. These collections are the product of intense research and development by Axolotl, combining cutting edge techniques with original new materials.

Shown here in the image above to the left is a door coated in our dramatic new Viper Bronze finish from our recently launched 'Skin' series that evokes images of torn snakeskin. The texture can be replicated in any of Axolotl's metals and for any size, shape and substrate.

The image in the centre is a stunning door from our 'Etch' range, finished in Treasury Bronze with a custom design etched into the face of the door and seamlessly continuing through onto the glass panel. This series lends itself to an endless range of designs from modern linears to luscious organics to work in with the design elements of any space. Both of these finishes can be applied to virtually any building or design element. Think feature walls, counter fronts, garage doors, practically anywhere, inside or out, where you desire a contemporary, eye-catching design.

The other images are examples of just a few of the striking doors created by Axolotl. The 'Shiver' door above to the right is in Axolotl Treasury Bronze with a Pearl Patina. And of the doors below, the carved 'Marrakesh' design is in Axolotl Brass Pearl Patina, the 'Cortex' door in the centre is in Axolotl Bronze Florentine and the ‘Channel’ door is in Axolotl Bronze Pearl Patina.

All of these doors can be seen on display at our stand at Designbuild, from 21st - 23rd May 2009, we'd love you to drop by and see us. Alternatively you can view the doors at our showroom alongside our large designer and contemporary door collection including the awarded 'Signature' series of doors.

Thick Skinned

SKIN.jpg

The team at Axolotl Metal are excited to introduce an inspired new range of metal surfaces.

‘Skin’ combines the raw, natural beauty of leather with the hardwearing qualities of metal, resulting in a unique textural finish that feels as good as it looks.

The new textures, along with all of our finishes, are created using real metal and have the durability to suit high traffic areas. ‘Skin’ can be applied to any surface from flat panels to compound curves. The textures are suitable for a broad range of design elements, from doors and furniture to feature walls and counters.

These images feature the textures in Bronze yet it is just as easy to achieve a 'Skin' texture in silver, copper or brass tones.

Make An Entrance

When doors are the first thing you notice on entering a home it is surprising that they seem to be the last thing you think about. So it is interesting that studies in the US commissioned by door manufacturer, Therma-tru, revealed a larger, more elaborate door can significantly increase a home's perceived value. As much as 3.2% to 6.6%! According to Therma-Tru, this was an increase in value of four to five times the cost of the door.

Axolotl have been innovating door design for a number of years now and have two new designs to whet your appetite - the Mecanno door featured here in Zinc, and our routered Floral door in pewter.

If these still aren’t individual enough for you, how about creating a personal statement with your own design. It is easy with Axolotl as any design element used within the residence can be incorporated in to your front door design. As all our doors are custom made, these designs can follow through to side or header panels which can be constructed to any size in either metal or glass.
