The Easel Project

The Easel Project brought together eight artists and designers to create functional artworks, realised with Axolotl. Four works entered the National Gallery of Victoria’s permanent collection in 2021.

Collaborators
Adam Cornish, Adam Goodrum, Belynda Henry, Ham Darroch, Jaime Hayon, Louise Olsen, Marcus Piper and Rachel Derum; easel bases by Chris Nicholson of Forest Furniture.

Axolotl’s scope

Develop and manufacture the artwork tops in collaboration with the eight artists and designers. Adam Cornish and Marcus Piper curated the collection.

Materials and processes

Fused bronze glass, brass inlaid into marble, heat-treated stainless steel, printed marble and 3D printed glass, paired with timber easel bases.

The challenge and response

Each design needed to work as an upright artwork and a coffee-table surface. Bespoke material development gave the eight designs their individual character while the rotating easel base enabled the change of use.
